UAE Visa Status Check Online

Dubai skyline representing UAE visa and residency status checks

Quick answer: To check your UAE visa status online, use the official portal that matches where your visa was issued. Dubai visas are checked on the GDRFA Dubai portal; visas from Abu Dhabi and the other six emirates are checked on the ICP Smart Services portal. Both checks are free.

Visa issued in Dubai? The ICP portal above won't show it — jump straight to the GDRFA Dubai section instead.

1. Quick Answer

UAE visa status is checked through two separate official systems, and which one applies to you depends entirely on which authority issued the visa — not on your nationality or visa type.

If your visa was issued in…Use this authorityCovers
DubaiGDRFA Dubai (General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs)Entry permits, residence visas, and establishment files sponsored in Dubai
Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah, FujairahICP (Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs & Port Security)Entry permits and residence visas for the other six emirates

Both checks are free, require no login for a basic lookup, and typically need your passport number, passport expiry date, and nationality. If you're not sure which authority issued your visa, the sponsor's location (employer, hotel, or family member) on your entry permit usually tells you — Dubai-sponsored files go through GDRFA, everything else goes through ICP.

A UAE visa check on either portal returns the same core information: current status, validity dates, and — for a UAE visa validity check specifically — the exact window during which the permit is legally usable. For the full picture of UAE visa types and services, see our UAE Visa Services hub.

2. How to Check UAE Visa Status Online

Whether you're asking how can I check my visa status in UAE as a resident, a sponsor, or a first-time visitor, or simply want to know how to check your visa status in UAE before a flight, the process is the same on both portals — only the destination URL changes. Here's the step-by-step version:

  1. Identify the right portal. Dubai-issued visas → GDRFA Dubai. All other emirates → ICP Smart Services.
  2. Open the file validity or visa status service on the relevant government website (linked in sections 5 and 6 below).
  3. Enter your details exactly as they appear on your passport — passport number, nationality, date of birth, and passport expiry date are the most common fields.
  4. Complete the CAPTCHA where prompted, then submit.
  5. Review the result, which typically shows the visa/file status, issue date, and expiry date.

If you're checking a visa that hasn't been issued yet — i.e. you want to apply for a UAE tourist visa rather than check an existing one — see our UAE Tourist Visa page for application options instead.

3. UAE Visa Status Check by Passport Number

A UAE visa check by passport number is the most common way to look up a file, and it's usually enough on its own — paired with your nationality and passport expiry date — to pull up an entry permit or a straightforward residence visa file on the ICP portal.

Important: passport number alone doesn't unlock every result. GDRFA Dubai's status-inquiry tool often asks for a file number, application/transaction number, or the applicant's first name in addition to (or instead of) the passport number, depending on which "search by" option you select. If a passport-only search returns nothing on the Dubai portal, try the file or application number from your entry permit instead.

For UAE visit visas specifically, the same passport-number logic applies — see our UAE Visit Visa page for details on visit visa validity periods and sponsor requirements.

4. What Information Do You Need?

Have these details ready before you start — using the exact spelling and numbers shown on your current passport avoids most "no record found" errors:

Always needed

Passport number, nationality, and passport expiry date

Often needed

Date of birth, and the visa/entry permit file number

GDRFA Dubai may ask for

Application/transaction number, or applicant's first name as printed on the permit

Alternative lookups

Unified Number (UID) or Emirates ID number, where the portal supports it

5. ICP Visa Status Check

Federal Authority — All emirates except Dubai

The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs & Port Security (ICP), formerly known as ICA, handles visa and residency files for Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah, and Fujairah. Its "File Validity" service is the standard way to check status online.

  • Go to the ICP Smart Services file-validity page.
  • Search using your passport number, nationality, and passport expiry date — or your Unified Number (UID) if you have one.
  • Complete the CAPTCHA and submit to view the file status, issue date, and expiry date.
  • No account or UAE Pass login is required for a basic file-validity search.
Open ICP Smart Services — File Validity ↗

You can also reach ICP through its main site at icp.gov.ae, the UAEICP mobile app, or by phone.

6. GDRFA Dubai Visa Status Check

Dubai only

The General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs – Dubai (GDRFA Dubai) is a separate authority from ICP and manages every entry permit, residence visa, and establishment file sponsored in Dubai. If your visa was arranged by a Dubai employer, hotel, or family sponsor, this is the portal to use — not ICP.

  • Go to the GDRFA Dubai website and open the "Visa Status" service, or use the direct status-inquiry tool.
  • Choose the correct "search by" option — File, Application/Transaction, or Establishment — since the field you need changes depending on what number you have.
  • Enter your passport and/or file details exactly as printed, then submit.
  • The result shows the current status along with the issue and expiry dates on file.
Open GDRFA Dubai — Visa Status Inquiry ↗

GDRFA Dubai's main site is at gdrfad.gov.ae, which also lists the DubaiNow app, Amer typing centres, and a dedicated fines inquiry service.

7. How to Check UAE Visa Validity

A UAE visa validity check answers one question: the date range during which your visa or residence permit is legally usable, from the issue date to the expiry date. It's shown automatically as part of the same status result you get from ICP or GDRFA, so there's no separate "validity-only" tool to use.

  • Run the status check for your emirate (sections 5 or 6 above).
  • Look for the issue date and expiry date fields in the result.
  • If the current date falls within that range and the status shows active/valid, your visa is currently valid.

Golden Visa and other long-term residence permits show validity periods of several years, while tourist and visit visas typically show 30, 60, or 90-day windows depending on the permit purchased.

8. How to Check UAE Visa Expiry Date

Your expiry date appears in the same ICP or GDRFA status result as your validity dates — there's no dedicated "expiry checker." A few extra ways to confirm it if the online result looks unclear:

  • Check the physical entry permit or residence visa sticker/printout, which shows the expiry date directly.
  • Check the DubaiNow app (for Dubai files) or the UAEICP app (for other emirates), both of which mirror the official portal data.
  • Contact your sponsor's PRO or HR team if the visa was issued through an employer.

Not sure what happens once that date passes? Read our detailed breakdown on what happens if your UAE visa expires.

9. How to Check Visa Cancellation Status

A cancelled visa shows up as "cancelled" in the same status search rather than as a separate lookup. This applies whether the cancellation was initiated by your employer, sponsor, or by you directly at a typing centre or Amer/GDRFA service point.

  • Run the standard status check (sections 5 or 6) — a successful cancellation will typically show a cancellation date alongside the file status.
  • If you cancelled a residence visa yourself, ask the typing centre or PRO for the cancellation confirmation number as a backup record.
  • Note that cancellation starts a grace period (commonly 30 days for standard residence visas), not an immediate exit requirement — see the grace-period details in section 16.

10. UAE Visa Status vs Visa Validity

These two terms get used interchangeably, but they answer different questions:

Visa Status

Answers "what state is my file in right now?" — active, under process, cancelled, expired, or rejected. It's a snapshot of the current situation.

Visa Validity

Answers "for how long is my visa legally usable?" — the issue-to-expiry date range. A visa can be "active" status and still be close to the end of its validity window.

In practice, checking your status also shows you the validity dates in the same result — you don't need two separate searches.

11. UAE Visa Status vs Visa Cancellation

Visa Status

A general term covering every possible state a file can be in — including active, expired, or under process, as well as cancelled.

Visa Cancellation

One specific status value, meaning the sponsor or holder has formally ended the visa. Cancellation is deliberate and triggers a grace period; expiry is passive and happens automatically once the validity date passes.

Confusing the two matters in practice: a cancelled visa usually gives you a set number of days to exit or change status, while an expired (uncancelled) visa can start accruing overstay fines immediately — see sections 15–17.

12. What Different Visa Statuses Mean

Status shownWhat it means
Active / ValidThe visa or entry permit is currently within its issue-to-expiry date range and usable.
Under ProcessAn application (new visa, renewal, or change of status) is still being reviewed — no result yet.
Approved / Not Yet PrintedThe application was approved but the physical visa or stamping hasn't been completed.
CancelledThe visa has been formally terminated by the sponsor or holder; a grace period usually follows.
ExpiredThe validity date has passed without renewal, extension, or exit.
RejectedThe application was declined; check the reason with the issuing authority or your sponsor.
No Record FoundNo matching file exists for the details entered — often a data-entry or wrong-portal issue (see section 14).

Exact wording can vary slightly between the ICP and GDRFA systems, and between the web portal and mobile apps, but these categories cover the results most travellers and residents see.

13. What to Do If You Cannot Find Your Visa

If you're trying to know your visa status in UAE and the portal keeps returning nothing, work through this list in order before assuming there's a problem with the file itself.

  1. Double-check the portal. Dubai-sponsored visas won't appear on ICP, and vice versa — confirm which authority issued your file (sections 5 and 6).
  2. Re-enter your passport number carefully, including any leading zeros, and use the passport that was valid when the visa was issued if you've since renewed it.
  3. Try an alternate identifier — file number, application number, or Unified Number (UID) — if a passport-only search returns nothing.
  4. Allow processing time. Newly issued or newly cancelled visas can take a short while to reflect in the online system.
  5. Contact the authority directly — ICP's call centre or a GDRFA Amer typing centre can confirm a file status manually.
  6. Ask your sponsor or agent if the visa was arranged through an employer, hotel, or visa services company — they'll have the file or application number on hand.

14. Common UAE Visa Status Problems

Wrong portal used

Checking a Dubai visa on ICP (or a non-Dubai visa on GDRFA) returns "no record found" every time.

Old vs new passport

Renewing your passport after the visa was issued can make a passport-only search fail — use the original passport number.

Data-entry mismatches

A single wrong digit in the passport number or an expiry date typo is the most common cause of a failed search.

System delays

Very recent applications, renewals, or cancellations can take time to sync with the public-facing portal.

Third-party site confusion

Unofficial "visa status checker" tools sometimes ask for extra personal details — the free official portals never require payment for a basic lookup.

Session/CAPTCHA errors

Government portals can be busy at peak times; clearing your browser cache or trying a different browser often resolves this.

15. What If Your UAE Visa Has Expired?

An expired visa doesn't automatically mean a fine — it depends on your visa type and whether a grace period applies. Residence visas typically carry a grace period (commonly 30 days, longer for Golden Visa holders), while pre-arranged tourist and visit visas currently carry little to no grace period before daily overstay charges apply.

16. What If Your Visa Is Cancelled?

A cancelled residence visa generally gives you a defined grace period — commonly around 30 days — to either exit the UAE or apply for a new visa or change of status. During that window you're not accruing overstay fines, but the clock is running.

  • Confirm the exact cancellation date and grace period on your cancellation paperwork or via the status check.
  • Decide whether you're exiting the country or switching to a new visa/status before the grace period ends.
  • If you want to extend your stay or move to a different visa category, see our guide on how to change your visa status or extend your visa.

17. What If You Have an Overstay Fine?

As of the UAE's unified fine structure introduced by the ICP in February 2026, overstay penalties are a flat AED 50 per day, applied uniformly to tourist, visit, and residence visas across every emirate — replacing the previous system where fines varied by visa type and emirate. Fines start accruing from the first day after your visa (or grace period, for cancelled residence visas) expires.

Rules and rates can change. Overstay fines, grace periods, and amnesty windows are set by ICP and GDRFA and have been adjusted more than once in the past year. Always confirm your exact balance on the official fines-inquiry tools rather than relying on a fixed figure from any guide, including this one.

  • Check your outstanding fine through the GDRFA Dubai fines inquiry service (Dubai files) or the ICP portal (other emirates).
  • Fines must generally be cleared before a new visa application, status change, or exit for anyone who overstayed.
  • If the amount looks larger than expected, or you believe it was accrued in error, raise it directly with ICP or GDRFA — don't rely on third-party calculators.

18. When You May Need Professional Visa Assistance

Most status checks are simple enough to run yourself in a couple of minutes. It's worth getting an experienced visa team involved when:

  • Your status shows "no record found" and you've already tried both portals and alternate identifiers
  • You're facing an overstay fine and need it verified, explained, or reduced through the correct channel
  • A cancellation or expiry deadline is close and you need to change status, extend, or re-enter quickly
  • You're applying for a new UAE tourist or visit visa and want the paperwork handled end-to-end

Gulliver Travels is an IATA-accredited travel and visa services agency in Dubai and Abu Dhabi — not a government authority — and we regularly help travellers and residents resolve exactly these situations. 19. Frequently Asked Questions

Is checking UAE visa status online free?

Yes. Both the ICP Smart Services file-validity check and the GDRFA Dubai visa status inquiry are free through the official government portals. Be cautious of third-party sites that charge a fee for the same lookup.

Can I check someone else's UAE visa status?

Yes — the official portals don't require the visa holder's login for a basic status check. With their passport number, nationality, and expiry date, sponsors, employers, and family members can check on someone else's behalf.

Can I check my UAE visa status without a UAE Pass account?

Yes, for a basic file-validity or status search. A UAE Pass or portal login is only needed for account-based features like tracking a linked application dashboard.

Why does my UAE visa status show "no record found"?

The most common causes are checking the wrong portal for your emirate, a data-entry mismatch in your passport number, or using a newer passport than the one on file. See section 14 for the full list.

Is there one single UAE-wide visa status portal?

No. Visa status is split between two systems — GDRFA Dubai for Dubai-issued visas, and ICP Smart Services for the other six emirates. There's no single combined federal-and-Dubai lookup tool.

How often is the visa status information updated?

Both systems are described by ICP and GDRFA as real-time or near real-time, though very recent applications, renewals, or cancellations can occasionally take a short while to appear.

Does checking my visa status show my overstay fine?

Not always in the same screen. Use the dedicated fines-inquiry service on the GDRFA Dubai or ICP site for an accurate, up-to-date fine balance rather than assuming it's included in a standard status result.

What's the difference between "expired" and "cancelled" on a status check?

Expired means the validity date passed without renewal or exit. Cancelled means the sponsor or holder deliberately ended the visa, which usually starts a grace period. See section 11 for the full comparison.
