If your current visa is still valid and you simply need more time in the UAE, an in-country extension through ICP or GDRFA is usually the cheapest, lowest-effort route. If you're not eligible for an extension, your visa has already lapsed, or you want a guaranteed same-day result, an A2A (airport-to-airport) visa change is the fastest way to re-enter on a fresh visa. A B2B (border-to-border) change via Oman is a slower but generally cheaper version of the same idea. A2A and B2B are what most people mean by a "visa run."
None of these is universally "best" — the right one depends on your nationality, current visa status, and how much time and budget you have. The comparison below and the questions in "Which option is right for you" are built to get you to the right answer quickly.
Three ways to extend or change your UAE visa
Extension, A2A and B2B are three different processes — pick the one that matches your situation, not just the one you've heard of.
"Extending your visa" and "changing your visa" get used interchangeably, but they're not the same thing, and they're not handled by the same process. Here are the three distinct UAE visa extension and visa change options at a glance.
- In-country visa extension
- Applying through ICP or GDRFA to prolong an existing visit or tourist visa without leaving the UAE.
- A2A visa change (airport-to-airport)
- Exiting on a short flight to a nearby country, staying airside, and re-entering the UAE the same day on a new visa — a same-day "visa run" by air.
- B2B visa change (border-to-border)
- Exiting overland — typically via the Oman border — by bus, then re-entering on a new visa.
In-Country Extension
Apply through ICP/GDRFA to extend your existing visit or tourist visa without leaving the country. Usually the lowest-cost route when you qualify.
Best for: visa still valid, straightforward extension, no urgent deadline.
A2A Visa Change
Short flight to Qatar, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia or Oman, remain airside, return same day on a brand-new UAE visa.
Best for: urgent deadlines, expired visas, or when an extension isn't available.
A2A visa change detailsB2B Visa Change
Exit overland — typically via the Oman border — by bus, then re-enter on a new visa. More travel time, generally lower cost than A2A.
Best for: budget-conscious travellers who aren't in a same-day rush.
B2B visa change detailsUAE visa rules for 2026: grace period, overstay fines & exit permits
The facts that most often catch travellers out — confirm the exact figures for your nationality and visa type before you act.
- No standard grace period. The buffer that previously allowed a short window after expiry has been removed for tourist and visit visas. A temporary emergency waiver ran between March and April 2026 for travellers affected by regional flight disruption — that waiver has since closed, and there is no ongoing grace period at time of writing. Apply for your extension, A2A or B2B change before your current visa expires.
- The UAE overstay fine is unified at AED 50 per day across visa categories and emirates, replacing the previous system where Dubai, Abu Dhabi and other emirates each applied slightly different fee structures. Fines accrue automatically in the ICP/GDRFA system from the day after expiry — you won't receive a notification, so the amount can build up before you realise.
- Overstaying more than 30 days typically means you cannot simply book a flight and leave — you'll need to obtain an exit permit first, which has its own fee and processing step.
- Extensions are typically granted in 30-day increments and, for many visit and tourist visas, can usually be taken up to two times when you remain eligible — but the exact number of extensions, the length, and any annual stay cap vary by visa type, nationality and issuing authority (ICP vs. GDRFA Dubai). Rather than quote a single fixed figure that may be out of date by the time you read it, we check your specific visa category with you before you apply.
- No active nationwide amnesty is running as of this update. Amnesty programmes have appeared periodically in the past; if one is announced, we'll update this page, but don't delay your extension or exit while waiting to see if one arrives.
Extension vs A2A vs B2B: cost, speed & eligibility compared
| Factor | In-Country Extension | A2A Visa Change | B2B Visa Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Do you leave the UAE? | No | Yes — short flight, airside only | Yes — overland via Oman |
| Typical turnaround | Several working days | Often same day | 1–2 days, including travel time |
| Relative cost | Generally lowest | Higher (includes flight) | Mid-range |
| Works if visa already expired? | Often not — check eligibility first | Yes, in most cases | Yes, in most cases |
| Physical effort | Lowest — no travel | Airport transit, short flight | Longer land journey |
| Good for status change (e.g. to employment) | Yes, where eligible | Possible depending on case | Possible depending on case |
Which visa option is right for you?
Answer these in order — the first one that applies to you is usually your answer.
- Is your current visa still valid, with no urgent same-day deadline? Start with an in-country extension application. It's typically cheaper and means you never leave the country.
- Has your visa already expired, or will it expire in the next day or two and you're not eligible to extend? A2A is built for exactly this — same-day turnaround minimises the days you're exposed to overstay fines.
- Is cost more important to you than speed, and you have a day or two of flexibility? B2B via the Oman land border is usually the more economical route.
- Are you trying to move onto an employment, residence, Golden or Green Visa? This is a status change, not a like-for-like extension — talk to us before your current visa lapses, since eligibility depends on your specific offer or category.
Still not sure? Send us your visa type, nationality and expiry date on WhatsApp and we'll tell you which route applies to your case — no guesswork.
Why travellers need to extend or change status
- Trip running longer than planned — flights, tours or family visits that stretch past the original visa validity.
- Unexpected delays — cancelled or rescheduled flights that would otherwise push you into an accidental overstay.
- Business extending beyond the original itinerary.
- A change of plans mid-trip, including deciding to stay with family or friends longer.
- A job offer or residency opportunity that requires a formal status change rather than a simple extension.
Documents for a UAE visa extension or status change
Requirements differ by which of the three routes you take and by nationality, but most applications ask for a similar core set:
- Passport valid for at least six months from your intended new expiry date.
- Copy of your current UAE visa (or the cancelled/expired one, if applicable).
- Recent passport-size photograph, white background.
- Proof of onward or return travel.
- Proof of sufficient funds and, in many cases, valid travel/medical insurance.
- For A2A/B2B specifically: a UAE-based guarantor may be required, typically with at least three months' residence validity remaining.
We verify your document list against your specific visa type and nationality before you submit anything — this avoids the single biggest cause of rejected or delayed applications.
How the UAE visa extension & change process works, step by step
- Tell us your situation. Visa type, nationality, current expiry date and what you need (extension, A2A, B2B, or status change). Send this on WhatsApp for the fastest response.
- We confirm your eligible route(s). Sometimes more than one option is available — we'll explain the trade-offs for your specific case rather than defaulting to whichever is easiest to sell.
- Documents and payment. We tell you exactly what's needed and handle submission through the correct channel — ICP/GDRFA portal for extensions, or flight/travel booking for A2A and B2B.
- Processing. For extensions this runs through the government system; for A2A/B2B you travel while we manage the visa application in parallel.
- You receive your updated status. Digitally, typically via WhatsApp or email, so you can carry on with your trip.
UAE visa extension & status change: FAQs
Can I extend my UAE visit visa without leaving the country?
Yes — most tourist and visit visas can be extended in-country through ICP or GDRFA, without exiting the UAE. This is a different service from A2A or B2B, which involve physically leaving and re-entering.
Is there still a grace period after a UAE visa expires?
No standard grace period currently applies to tourist and visit visas — it was removed in early 2026. A temporary emergency waiver ran from March to April 2026 for travellers hit by flight disruption; it has since closed. Confirm current status with ICP/GDRFA before relying on any grace period.
How much is the UAE overstay fine right now?
Since February 2026, the fine has been unified at AED 50 per day across all visa categories and emirates, replacing the previous emirate-by-emirate system. It accrues automatically from the day after expiry. Confirm the current figure on the ICP or GDRFA portal, as it can change.
What's the difference between A2A and B2B visa change?
A2A means a short flight to a nearby country, staying airside, and returning the same day on a new visa. B2B means crossing overland, typically via the Oman border, by bus. A2A is faster; B2B is usually cheaper but takes longer. Both are commonly called a "visa run."
Which is cheaper: extension, A2A or B2B?
An in-country extension is usually cheapest when you qualify for one. B2B is generally more affordable than A2A because it doesn't include a flight, but it takes more time. A2A costs more but is the fastest guaranteed route.
Can I switch from a visit visa to a work or residence visa?
In-country status change to employment or residence status is possible in specific cases — for example a confirmed job offer with your employer initiating the work permit, or eligibility for Golden or Green Visa categories. Your current visa must still be valid when you apply, and eligibility depends on your individual case.
What happens if I do nothing and my visa expires?
You begin accruing a daily overstay fine automatically, with no notification sent to you. Extended overstays can also require an exit permit before you're able to leave, and can affect future visa applications. Act before expiry rather than after.
