To sponsor family members, you must meet certain conditions set by the UAE authorities. Here’s what’s required:

  • Minimum Income: A minimum monthly salary of AED 4,000, or AED 3,000 with accommodation, is necessary. These figures can vary slightly depending on the relation and visa type.
  • Employment Status: You must be employed or own a registered business in the UAE. Tourist or temporary visa holders are not eligible.
  • Valid UAE Residency: Only residents with a valid UAE visa can sponsor dependents.
  • Eligible Relationships: You can sponsor immediate family—spouse, children, and parents. In certain cases, siblings or stepchildren may also be eligible.

Before applying, you’ll need to gather the following documents:

  • Attested Marriage Certificate: Required for sponsoring a spouse, with attestation from both your home country and the UAE Embassy.
  • Birth Certificates: Attested birth certificates for children.
  • Employment Proof: A salary certificate or copy of your labor contract as income verification.
  • Accommodation Proof: A tenancy contract or official company-provided housing agreement.
  • Health Insurance: Valid medical insurance is mandatory for all family members.
  • Medical Fitness Report: Adults (18+) must undergo and pass a medical fitness test.
  • Passport Copies: Your passport and those of the dependents.
  • Photographs: Recent passport-sized photos of the family members.
  • Emirates ID Forms: Emirates ID applications for each sponsored person.
Step 1: Apply for the Residency Visa

Submit the visa application through the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) or an authorized typing center, including all required documentation.

Step 2: Pay Visa Fees

Pay the applicable visa fees, typically ranging between AED 1,000–2,000 depending on the type and duration. Additional charges apply for urgent processing.

Step 3: Complete the Medical Test

Once approved, family members aged 18 and above must undergo a mandatory medical screening to check for infectious diseases such as HIV and tuberculosis.

Step 4: Apply for Emirates ID

Following the medical test, apply for the Emirates ID, which is a legal identification card required for all UAE residents.

Step 5: Residency Visa Stamping

Finally, visit the GDRFA to get the residency visa stamped in the family member’s passport. This officially completes the sponsorship process.

Family residency visas are typically valid for 1 to 3 years, depending on the sponsor’s visa. It’s crucial to renew the visa before it expires to avoid fines. The renewal process mirrors the original application and requires the same set of documents.

  • Working Family Members: Once a sponsored family member secures employment in Dubai, they can transfer from a family visa to a work visa through their employer.

  • Renewal for Students: Children studying in the UAE can have their visas extended for the duration of their education.

  • Grace Period: After visa expiry, there is a 30-day grace period to renew the visa or exit the country to avoid overstay penalties.
