UAE passport holders don't need a visa for Oman. UAE residents (expats) do. If the profession on the back of your Emirates ID is on Oman's approved list, you can get a 28-day GCC-resident visa on arrival or eVisa for OMR 5 (about AED 48). If your job isn't listed, you apply through a travel agent, a sponsor, or the Oman Embassy for a standard tourist visa. Driving over adds an AED 35 UAE exit fee plus car insurance that covers Oman. Yes — with one exception. If you hold a UAE passport, you don't need a visa at all; Emiratis enter Oman on their passport or Emirates ID. Everyone living in the UAE on a residence permit needs an actual Oman visa on top of that residency.
Here's the mix-up that catches people out: your UAE residence visa does not get you into Oman by itself. It only proves you live in the Emirates — which is what unlocks the cheaper GCC-resident rate. You still apply for a separate Oman entry visa, either online in advance or on arrival at the border.
There are four practical routes. Which one applies to you comes down to your Emirates ID profession, how long you want to stay, and how many times you plan to cross.
Unsponsored, OMR 5 for 28 days. For residents whose Emirates ID profession is on Oman's approved list. Apply online before you go, or pick it up at Muscat airport or a land border. This is the route most residents use.
For anyone whose profession isn't on the approved list, or who wants longer or repeat entry: roughly OMR 20 for a 30-day single entry, or OMR 50 for a one-year multiple-entry visa. May need a sponsor or agent.
Under Royal Oman Police Decision 109/2026, Oman added a zero-fee 14-day tourist visa for travellers from designated countries. Eligibility includes GCC residents in an approved profession — but the full nationality list is still being published, so verify first.
If your profession isn't listed, a family member in Oman, an Omani host, or a licensed travel agent can sponsor a visit visa. Business travellers meeting a company in Oman usually route through this or the standard tourist eVisa.

The visa isn't the whole bill if you drive: add the AED 35 UAE exit fee, plus motor insurance that covers your car inside Oman (more on that below). Overstaying an Oman visa carries a daily fine — around OMR 10 per day at last check — so match your dates to your visa.
Read this twice, because it's the single most common reason residents get turned back. That OMR 5 rate — whether you take it online or at the border — only goes to residents whose job title on the back of the Emirates ID is on Oman's approved profession list. If your title isn't listed, the cheap visa-on-arrival route simply isn't open to you, and you apply for a standard tourist visa instead.
Good news for 2026: on 31 July 2026 the Royal Oman Police quietly expanded the approved list to well over 100 job titles — from doctors, engineers and accountants to designers, jewellers, tour guides and even social-media influencers. White-collar categories are broadly covered; blue-collar categories generally remain ineligible.

Doing it yourself on the Royal Oman Police portal is quick and usually smarter than paying for something you can file in ten minutes. Here's the flow:
Go to evisa.rop.gov.om, choose Apply for Tourist Visa, register a new user, and verify the OTP sent to your email.
From your dashboard choose Apply for Unsponsored Visa, confirm your GCC residence, and select 29A – GCC Resident Visa.
Enter your passport details, nationality, and — importantly — the occupation exactly as printed on your Emirates ID, plus the personal details requested.
Attach your passport copy, passport photo, Emirates ID, and UAE residence-visa copy.
Review, submit, and pay the OMR 5 fee by card once approval instructions arrive by email.
It arrives by email as a PDF. Keep it on your phone and print a copy — officers will ask to see it at the border or airport.

Pay the AED 35 UAE exit fee, show your eVisa or take the visa on arrival at Omani immigration, show your motor insurance, and let customs check the car.
Your normal UAE motor policy almost certainly stops at the border. To drive legally in Oman you need cover that crosses with you — either an Oman extension on your current policy or separate cover, typically from around AED 90–110 depending on the car and level. It's checked at the crossing, and if anything happens on the road without it, the bill lands on you personally.
