Quick Answer

Do UAE residents need a visa for Japan, and how do you apply from Dubai?

Most do. Emirati passport holders can visit Japan visa-free for short stays, but expat residents (Indian, Filipino, Pakistani, and most others) need a Japan visa — and there's no visa on arrival. Since August 2024, all applications from the UAE go through VFS Global (Dubai & Abu Dhabi), not the Consulate directly. You can apply for a single-entry tourism eVISA (issued electronically) or a sticker visa (tourism, business, multiple-entry). Processing takes about 8–10 working days, and you can only apply within 90 days of travel. Gulliver Travels prepares your documents and handles the VFS submission for you.

Overview

Japan Visa for UAE Residents — 2026 Guide

Japan is one of the fastest-growing destinations from the UAE — cherry blossoms in spring, Tokyo and Osaka city breaks, and autumn foliage. Because the application route changed in 2024 and Japan has some unique requirements, getting it right matters. Here's exactly how to apply from Dubai in 2026.

A Japan visa lets you enter Japan for tourism, business or to visit family for short stays of up to 90 days. There is no visa on arrival — you must arrange it in advance, unless your passport qualifies for visa-free entry.

The biggest change: since 1 August 2024, the Consulate-General of Japan in Dubai no longer accepts applications directly. All applications by UAE residents are now lodged through VFS Global, with Japan Visa Application Centres at Wafi Mall in Dubai and The Mall, World Trade Centre in Abu Dhabi. The good news for expats — UAE residents of any nationality can apply here, so you don't need to fly home.

There are two main routes: the electronic eVISA for single-entry tourism, and the traditional sticker visa for tourism, business and multiple entries. Gulliver Travels prepares your full document file — including Japan's distinctive day-by-day schedule of stay — and handles the VFS submission so nothing causes a delay. See all our visa services →

Who Needs a Visa

Do You Need a Japan Visa from the UAE?

Whether you need a visa depends on your passport nationality. Here's how it works for UAE residents in 2026.

🛂

Expat Residents — Visa Needed

Indian, Filipino, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Egyptian, Sri Lankan and most other passport holders must apply for a Japan visa in advance via VFS Global. You can apply from the UAE with valid residency.

🟢

Visa-Free Nationalities

UAE (Emirati) passport holders enjoy visa-free short stays under the Japan–UAE Visa Exemption Agreement (a one-time passport registration may apply). Nationals of the UK, USA, EU, Canada, Australia and others are also visa-exempt.

🚫

No Visa on Arrival

Japan does not offer visa on arrival to any nationality. If you're not visa-exempt, you must obtain your visa before you travel — there's no option to get one at the airport.

Applying from Dubai works for any nationality as long as your UAE residence visa is valid (commonly 3–6 months remaining). Some nationalities pay reduced or zero government fees under bilateral agreements. Send us your nationality and we'll confirm your exact requirements →

Know the Difference

Japan eVISA vs Sticker Visa

Both are submitted through VFS Global for UAE residents, but they work differently at the airport. Here's how to choose.

📱 eVISA

Electronic — Single-Entry Tourism

A single-entry, short-term tourism visa issued electronically. There's no sticker in your passport.

  • Best for individual tourists & groups
  • Show the live Visa Issuance Notice at immigration
  • Screenshots & printouts are not accepted
  • Bring a charged phone with internet on arrival
📘 Sticker Visa

Traditional — Wider Purposes

A physical visa sticker in your passport, covering more travel purposes and multiple-entry options.

  • Tourism, business & visiting relatives
  • Single, double or multiple entry
  • Passport submitted to VFS for the sticker
  • No internet needed at immigration

Fees 2026

Japan Visa Fees from Dubai 2026

Japan's government visa fee depends on your nationality and entry type, and is paid in AED cash at the counter. Here's how the cost breaks down.

1

Government Visa Fee

Set by Japan and varies by nationality. Single-entry is around AED 110–120 and multiple-entry around AED 215–220. Some nationalities (e.g. Indian passport holders) pay a reduced or zero fee under bilateral agreements.

2

VFS Service Fee

A VFS Global service charge of around AED 100–110 (incl. VAT) per applicant, paid when you submit at the Japan Visa Application Centre.

3

Add-ons & Our Service

Optional VFS extras (courier, premium lounge, photos) plus our transparent professional service fee for document prep and submission.

Good to know: Japan visa fees are paid in AED cash at the counter — there is no card or online payment for the consular fee. Because the government fee genuinely varies by nationality and entry type, we give you the exact, itemised total for your passport up front. Get your nationality-specific Japan visa quote →

Required Documents

Japan Visa Documents for UAE Residents

Japan is precise about documents — especially the day-by-day schedule of stay and the photo spec. A complete, consistent file is what wins approvals.

📋

Core Documents

  • Passport — valid 6+ months with blank pages
  • Completed Japan visa application form
  • One photo — 45×45mm, white background
  • UAE residence visa copy (valid 3–6 months)
  • Emirates ID copy
  • Confirmed round-trip flight itinerary
  • Hotel bookings for the entire stay
📁

Supporting Evidence

  • Day-by-day schedule of stay in Japan
  • Bank statements (last 3–6 months)
  • Employer NOC / salary certificate, or trade licence
  • Cover letter explaining your trip
  • Previous Japan / G7 visas (helps multiple-entry)
  • Business: invitation letter + company documents
  • Visiting relatives: invitation + relationship proof
Upload only what's requested: for the eVISA, uploading extra documents that weren't asked for can cause the application to be terminated. We make sure you submit exactly the right set — no more, no less.

Avoid These Mistakes

Common Reasons Japan Visas Get Delayed or Refused

Most issues are avoidable. Knowing them — and having your file checked first — keeps your application on track.

📝

Weak Daily Schedule

A vague or inconsistent day-by-day plan that doesn't match your flights and hotels raises doubts.

💰

Insufficient Funds

Bank statements that don't credibly cover the trip, or sudden unexplained deposits, weaken the case.

🪪

Short Residence Validity

A UAE residence visa with too little validity (commonly under 3–6 months) can cause rejection.

📸

Non-Compliant Photo

Japan's strict 45×45mm white-background spec — wrong size or background causes delays.

📄

Incomplete or Extra Docs

Missing required documents, or uploading unrequested ones on the eVISA, can stall or void the application.

Applying Too Early or Late

Applications outside the 90-day window aren't accepted; last-minute filing risks missing your travel date.

FAQ

Japan Visa from Dubai — FAQs

Everything UAE residents ask about applying for a Japan visa in 2026 — eligibility, eVISA vs sticker, fees, processing and where to apply.

Most do. UAE (Emirati) passport holders can enter Japan visa-free for short stays under the Japan–UAE Visa Exemption Agreement. Expat residents — Indian, Filipino, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Egyptian and most other nationalities — must obtain a Japan visa in advance through VFS Global. Japan offers no visa on arrival to any nationality.
Yes. UAE residents of any nationality can apply for a Japan visa from the UAE, provided they hold valid UAE residency. Since August 2024 all applications are lodged through VFS Global in Dubai or Abu Dhabi rather than directly at the Consulate or Embassy.
The eVISA is a single-entry, short-term tourism visa issued electronically — at immigration you show a live Visa Issuance Notice on a connected device rather than a passport sticker. A sticker visa is placed in your passport and covers tourism, business, visiting relatives and multiple-entry travel. For UAE residents both routes are submitted through VFS Global.
Government visa fees vary by nationality and entry type — single-entry is roughly AED 110–120 and multiple-entry roughly AED 215–220, paid in AED cash at the counter. Some nationalities pay a reduced or zero fee under bilateral agreements; for example, Indian passport holders currently pay no fee for a single-entry visa. A VFS service fee of around AED 100–110 (incl. VAT) also applies. We confirm your exact, nationality-specific cost.
Processing takes a minimum of 8 to 10 working days from submission and can extend to 3 to 4 weeks if documents are incomplete or further checks are needed. Applications can only be lodged within 90 days of your travel date, so apply about 4 to 6 weeks ahead, earlier for cherry-blossom (Mar–May) and autumn (Oct–Nov) peaks.
At VFS Global Japan Visa Application Centres. Residents of Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah apply at VFS Dubai (Wafi Mall) under the Consulate-General of Japan in Dubai. Abu Dhabi and Al Ain residents apply at VFS Abu Dhabi (The Mall, World Trade Centre) under the Embassy of Japan in Abu Dhabi.
No. Even for the eVISA, UAE residents lodge the application through VFS Global rather than fully online, and the application is submitted at the Japan Visa Application Centre. The eVISA result is then issued electronically as a Visa Issuance Notice.
Your passport (valid 6+ months), a copy of your UAE residence visa and Emirates ID, the application form, a 45×45mm white-background photo, confirmed round-trip flights, hotel bookings, recent bank statements, an employer NOC or trade licence, and a detailed day-by-day schedule of stay in Japan. Business visas need an invitation letter and company documents.
No. Japan does not offer visa on arrival to any nationality. You must arrange your visa in advance, or travel visa-free if your passport qualifies under a visa-exemption arrangement such as the Japan–UAE agreement for Emirati nationals.
Yes. UAE residents can apply for a Japan multiple-entry visa, usually granted to applicants with a strong financial profile, previous travel to Japan or G7 countries, or genuine business reasons. The Consulate decides the entries and validity granted; we help you build a strong supporting file.
JESTA is a planned electronic pre-travel authorisation that Japan aims to launch around fiscal 2028 for visa-exempt visitors. There is no operational JESTA system in 2026, so any website offering early JESTA registration should be treated as unofficial and avoided.
No agency can guarantee a Japan visa — approval is decided solely by the Japanese consular authorities, and VFS Global is the only official application centre. What Gulliver Travels does is maximise your chances: accurate document preparation, eVISA or VFS submission support, appointment booking and guidance so you present the strongest possible case.
